We have seen elders at home lose both strength and mobility, find it difficult to do menial tasks like stand up from a chair, lie down/get up from bed, use the washroom, etc., have we not? Losing functional independence can be devastating both physically and mentally as we age.
Our ability to move comfortably reduces as we age. This is because of poor joint health and age-related loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia).
Our muscles have the ability to gain strength steadily until the age of 30-35 post which, we lose about 3-5% muscle every decade.
This only speeds up after 60 and again after 80 years of age.
This also leads to low bone density and we become prone to frequent injuries.
While we cannot stop the process of ageing, we most definitely can slow it down. An active lifestyle helps us retain those muscles because —
The more we USE them the lesser we LOSE them!
A combination of strength training along with aerobic exercises like walking/cycling/yoga have proven to be very effective for retaining muscle mass.
Wouldn’t you want to be functionally independent in your old age and enjoy life?
You need to dedicate just 30-45 minutes a day for exercise.
Or do you want to be trapped in crutches/wheelchair?
WHAT’S STOPPING YOU?
