Corticosteroids are medications often prescribed to treat inflammatory conditions in the body. They are highly effective due to their potent nature. However, they can impact the body’s chemistry, including water and electrolyte balance. As a result, the body retains fluids, which can affect metabolism and fat storage. This is commonly seen as weight gain, especially around the neck, face, and abdomen.
While short-term steroid use typically doesn’t have a serious impact, prolonged use can lead to significant weight changes. Since corticosteroids are often prescribed for chronic health issues, stopping them isn’t a viable solution. Instead, dosages are gradually reduced under close medical supervision, rarely stopped abruptly. To manage side effects, it’s important to adjust eating habits:
- Include fiber-rich foods to help you feel fuller for longer.
- Balance each meal with a good source of protein.
- Reduce sodium intake to minimize fluid retention.
- Drink plenty of water to help decrease water retention.
- Opt for several smaller meals with healthy choices to curb cravings.
- Increase daily physical activity by walking more, moving around at home or work, and exercising.
