Have you noticed how chugging an entire bottle of water makes you pee so frequently that it is annoying? Have you also noticed that you feel thirsty shortly after, like you peed out all the water you just drank? That’s because you actually did.

When you gulp water in large quantities, your body gets overwhelmed and kicks in a protective response to maintain electrolyte balance (called the bolus response). It does so by throwing out most of the gulped water in the form of urine. This leaves you thirsty yet again in sometime. Not to mention the innumerable bathroom visits between work, calls and meetings. So what can you do to actually hydrate well?

Simple: Sip, do not gulp.

Sip at regular intervals. Every hour, every half hour, whatever best suits your routine. In addition to keeping you better hydrated, there are other advantages to this:

  • Sipping water does not cause bloating unlike gulping water
  • This also aids saliva to mix with water, helping with better digestion
  • When your body absorbs water well, your brain will not confuse thirst with hunger – so no binging or cravings!

Hydration is such an important aspect of staying healthy, let us make sure to do it right!
