This is a common occurrence isn’t it? Either we have experienced it ourselves as women or seen a family member go through it. Swelling observed in the legs or hands, particularly in the ankles, feet or fingers during pregnancy is quite common. This tends to get worse for some by the end of the day and also as pregnancy progresses. Why does this happen though?

Due to hormonal changes primarily and increase in blood volume (by nearly 30-50%), fluid gets retained in the tissues. In addition to this, the growing uterus puts pressure on the vein which sends blood back to the heart, causing fluids to get retained in the legs. Gravity also plays a role as fluid accumulates in the lower half of the body when standing for long hours.

As normal as this is, it is uncomfortable and can be regulated by following:

  • Elevate your feet whenever possible
  • Wear comfortable footwear at all times
  • Do not stand for long hours
  • Massage your feet/hands regularly
  • Sleep on your left side; this reduces pressure on the vein allowing better blood flow
  • Hydrate well
  • Do light exercises often like calf raises, flexing your foot, wiggling toes, etc
  • Have a balanced diet, regulate salt intake
  • Use compression stockings for legs (only if advised by a doctor)

However, this swelling is considered abnormal when it happens suddenly, is combined with pain or blurry vision, breathlessness, etc., and needs to be addressed with doctor’s help immediately.
