You think it is easy for a skinny person to gain weight? Only a person who is underweight will know how difficult it really is for them to do so. They also feel fatigued through the day and some of them are slow eaters. This makes it difficult for them to eat big meals. Adding to that, women who are underweight often experience irregular, absent, or sometimes painful periods.” Of course, these conditions are generic and do not mean every underweight person experiences all of this.
The fact is, skinny people have very low muscle mass (as I had mentioned in one of my previous blogposts “what is skinny fat?”). This is actually why many of them tire easily. But, if they really wish to put on weight, simply eating more food/junk food is only going to increase their fat deposition (read the skinny fat post!). By binging, they only gain fat in their body, and this will further wreck their system which usually leads to complications later on like high cholesterol, diabetes and heart problems.
The only healthy way to gain weight is the same as to lose weight – balanced diet and exercise! A controlled calorie surplus through a balanced diet along with a well curated exercise routine will really turn things around.
The goal should not be to simply put on weight though. Rather it should be to put on muscle! Only then, will they gain strength and also become fitter. Remember, skinny does not mean healthy just like being heavy does not mean unhealthy!
Body composition matters the most. You can be only 50 kgs in weight, but how much of that is fat and muscle? That, my friend is where the true colours of your fitness are seen! Because real fitness isn’t about the number on the scale — it’s about what that number is made of.
