No, they actually do not. But sadly that is the misconception. Have you noticed how you feel like eating anything and everything you see, specially sugary items when you have gone without food for long hours? That is how diabetics feel EVEN AFTER EATING A MEAL.
Diabetics tend to have difficulty in using up glucose from blood for their activity. That is what makes them diabetic in the first place. The inefficient glucose uptake creates a feeling of prolonged hunger in the body which is what leads to a feeling of craving to get quick energy. Our body intuitively looks for something sweet when it needs quick energy and that, is where sugar craving comes from. Frequent sugar cravings, especially after meals, can be a sign that your body isn’t using glucose efficiently — an early indicator of insulin resistance. Diabetes medications help lower blood glucose levels by improving insulin function or reducing glucose production, but unless lifestyle factors are addressed, the body can remain inefficient in using glucose — and cravings can persist.
So factually, diabetics craving sugar is not just lack of willpower, it is a sign of metabolic malfunction. But we can make this better and help diabetics manage their cravings and blood sugars more effectively.
- Ensure portion control of every meal plate – sufficient protein, fat, carb and fibre. All these elements need to be there in EVERY MEAL PLATE consumed EVERY DAY. This keeps them satiated for longer and prevents craving.
- Exercise for 30-45 minutes atleast 3-4 times a week to MAINTAIN MUSCLE. Our muscles are metabolic engines that govern the efficiency of glucose uptake from blood. If we wish to maintain metabolism with age, eat all types of food and still stay healthy, we have got to exercise! Strength training or resistance exercises are especially powerful for improving insulin sensitivity.
- Walk for 15-20 min AFTER EVERY MEAL. This drastically improves glucose uptake from blood and is a lot more efficient than an hour’s worth of walking in the morning.
