Let’s start with a classic scene. Morning 8:00 AM.

One hand: “Sugar-free” coffee.

Other hand: 2 biscuits casually dunked like they don’t count.

And somewhere in the background… diabetes is struggling to not giggle.

Ah yes. The holy belief – “I don’t take sugar. Only sugar-free!”

You think you deserve a Nobel Prize for this?

This is going to make you feel uncomfortable BUT – Your body does NOT care where the sweetness came from – sugar, jaggery, honey or sugar-free.

What it actually cares about is the total carbohydrate load in your food intake.

Because at the end of the day: Carbs → Glucose → Blood sugar spike

And your body isn’t sitting there thinking: “Wow, this person used sugar-free. Let me behave better today.”

Sugar will spike anyway regardless of you quitting sugar because you still have not fixed your carbohydrate intake or balanced your meals effectively.

Now let us discuss coffee: the most innocent villain.

Coffee has become the emotional support system of modern India.

But here’s how it usually goes:

4–5 “mini” cups a day; each one with “just a little milk”.

Add sugar-free tablet because coffee is the addiction but sugar is not, right?

Maybe a rusk, biscuit, or snack on the side.

Where is the scope for a sugar spike in this, you think?

Let’s break this down:

Milk = carbs

Biscuits = refined carbs

Multiple cups = repeated insulin spikes because that is what caffeine does!

Caffeine triggers release of adrenaline which prompts the liver to release glucose into blood.

So now, you’ve basically created a slow, continuous glucose drip into your bloodstream all day long with repeated cups of coffee and why did this happen?

Because you feel tired, brain fogged, irritable and somehow you believe coffee can fix it!

To make this worse, some of my clients had actually come to believe that a bowl of fruit can cause sugar spike and that is why they have resorted to coffee + biscuit as a snack!

I mean, can you believe what misinformation can cost you? Health, it can cost you YOUR HEALTH!

The Sugar-free Trap

Sugar-free isn’t the villain but misusing it definitely is.

Artificial sweeteners don’t spike sugar directly but they keep your sweet cravings alive and kicking.

So by using sugar-free, you are giving into your sugar craving, but psychologically since you’re using sugar-free you feel you can have more of it and so you do exactly that.

What happens now?

Glucose spikes anyway!

You drink sweet coffee → so brain expects energy

But doesn’t get enough of it because it needs real food, not coffee → so you feel like eating something

You end up snacking again → glucose spikes anyway

Net result: You end up eating MORE.

This is exactly what happens with sugar-free biscuits and sweets too.

Same logic.

Beautiful strategy. But a strategy for destruction, undoubtedly.

So what should you actually do?

Relax. I’m not here to take away your coffee or happiness.

Just stop fooling yourself. That’s all.

  • Fix your coffee habit: Limit it to 1-2 cups a day. Stop compensating with sugar-free. Use real sugar, quit guilt tripping yourself over a spoon of sugar.
  • Eat a fruit instead! Mix it with a bunch of seeds and nuts, have a large fruit snack. Your sugar won’t spike I promise.
  • Watch your TOTAL carbs intake: Add protein and loads of fibre rich food, increase your water intake as well.
  • Adhere to meal timings: This really helps with keeping your sugars stable.
  • Build muscle: For the Nth time, please exercise! Some form of strength training atleast 3-4 days a week. Muscle is your metabolic engine, keep it alive! Muscle is what uses blood sugar rapidly.

So next time you sip that sugar-free coffee or snack on that biscuit, ask yourself:

“Is this actually helping…or just making me feel better for the next 2 minutes?”

Because diabetes doesn’t care about your feelings.

Only your habits will help you fight it.
